Amputation Tools From Before There Were Pain Killers

The most common procedure done by medics on the battlefields of the Civil War was amputation. Most of these resulted in death from shock or infection and patients were luckier to have died in battle than to have made it to the medical tent.

#2 Limb Vice

Notice the limb vice used as a sort of primitive tourniquet to stop bleeding…when that didn’t work surgeons would just yank back with a towel.
